Duncan
FAAS has partnered with West Urban to bring a new multi-family project to the city of Duncan in southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The two buildings are built into the slope respecting the scale of both Ypres and Brea while bringing affordable units to Duncan City. Duncan is surrounded by untouched forests, which we drew inspiration from during the design process. Natural materials like stone and wood create a dialogue with the natural surroundings, while more manufactured materials speak to Duncan’s urban environment.
Splitting the building into two created an opportunity to make a courtyard. Giving space for residents to cook, play, and enjoy the fresh air. The buildings are designed to provide vibrancy along both street interfaces and terrace in response to site and adjacent residential context. 305 Ypres is designed to provide residents with a unique at-grade courtyard amenity space and pavilion, a rooftop garden, and gathering space. It also supports the City’s ambition for more resilient and sustainable housing provision.
