Our Founders

James Andalis, Partner

James Andalis, Partner

James Andalis has over twenty years of experience in delivering planning, design and construction of projects for both private and public sector clients. James has broad experience in the industry from development financing to construction administration. This wide-ranging experience base and his most recent position as Managing Partner of an international, award winning architecture firm has allowed him to develop an expertise in strategic planning and project management of complex architectural projects.

James brings specific expertise in the areas of urban planning, transportation infrastructure, commercial and facility development and planning of large scale infrastructure and architectural projects. His project management expertise includes stakeholder engagement, where he has experience facilitating the alignment of diverse and often conflicting positions. James holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture with a Diploma in Architectural Technology, this solid technical base allows James to firmly grasp and support the technical requirements of the projects he manages. Primary project responsibilities include technical guidance and evaluation, preparation of planning and construction documents, overall quality control and review and assessment of project deliverables.

James also brings experience in commercial development, formerly a General Manager for a multi-family division of a large construction firm; he has overseen the development of over 500 units across Alberta. This experience provides a unique perspective that is rooted in understanding the financial component of all potential development as well as appreciating the need for decisive management to define goals and obtain results.

Other related experience includes heritage building preservation and sustainable design where he holds LEED AP designation with experience in delivering various sustainable projects.

Michael Farrar, Partner

Michael Farrar, Partner

Michael Farrar is a registered architect with over eighteen years of experience working on projects across North America, garnering recognition for design excellence, sustainable design and urban planning. Michael has been an instructor at the University of Calgary, combining professional exploration with academic research. He has been project architect for prominent place-making and transformative projects such as the award winning Glacier Discovery Walk and Flights YYC as well as the FormShift Vancouver project.

Michael provides a rigorous approach to design, beginning with a gathering of information from various sources including site, client, stakeholders and the community. This gathering of information serves to inform and shape the goals and vision of the project, ensuring the vision is based within the context and is supported by all those involved. The design process also includes a high level of collaboration and engagement with stakeholders, working closely with people to understand their needs and goals and developing solutions to mitigate often conflicting expectations.

Michael has garnered a broad range of experience and as such delivers leadership and guidance throughout the design process, providing clarity within complex projects. Specific experience with public infrastructure and civic amenities in Calgary has given Michael opportunities to work closely with the City of Calgary and community associations and understands the high public scrutiny placed upon such important public works.

As a registered architect in Alberta, Michael will provide design leadership throughout the project development, coordination and review of the construction documentation, client and regulating authority collaboration and overall project vision.

Project Management

FAAS believes that effective, strong, and clear project management is the key to successful project realization. The office is built around the concept that project structure is the most important tool for success.

Our office utilizes distinct project management strategies to achieve project realization. James Andalis and Michael Farrar, as experienced and skilled project managers, provide strong leadership, accountability, and quality control.

Construction Administration

FAAS personnel have garnered significant experience in the construction industry and, as such, can provide invaluable support throughout the construction phase of a project.

FAAS also has experience as owner’s representatives, providing oversight, reporting, and support to the construction team while ensuring that the interests of the client are met.

Residential Projects

The people at FAAS Architecture have extensive experience designing + building in the residential industry. Our project experience ranges from modest single family dwellings, to large multiphase developments.

The work includes mixed use projects providing commercial and live work spaces within residential developments. We provide services starting at site assessment and feasibility studies, through marketing and permitting to construction completion.

Commercial + Institutional

  • Advise FAAS Project Manager immediately of any project contract administration issues and work to resolve any problems
  • Provide input as required by Project Manager and/or production department on budgets, schedules, etc.
  • Provide feedback/mentoring on buildability and code issues to project team
  • Ensure professional responsibilities and obligations are met including compliance with codes and bylaws
  • Protect the project design intent through construction.
  • Coordinate all architectural functions from tender to close-out of project
  • Prepare, manage, and administer detailed construction contracts and change management documentation
